Florida does not run a staff-to-child ratio for small homes. It gives four fixed groups and the home picks one, each including household children under 13: four children from birth to 12 months; three from birth to 12 months plus others to six; six preschool children all older than 12 months; or ten children with at most five of preschool age and at most two of those under 12 months. A large family child care home works from two groups instead, eight children from birth to 24 months or twelve with no more than four under 24 months, and it keeps two full-time personnel on the premises.

The bands that bind are birth to 12 months for the small home and birth to 24 months for the large one. Swimming and wading carry their own supervision grid: 1:1 for infants and toddlers, 1:4 for preschoolers and 1:10 for school-age children.
