Verified August 31, 2026Iowa writes home capacity as per-category grids. Category A: up to 6 children not in school plus 2 school-age, with at most 4 under 24 months and 3 under 12 months. Category B: 8 not in school plus 4 school-age, same under-2 caps, and a second adult above 8. Category C: 14 not in school plus 2 school-age with at most 6 under 24 months, two providers, and 16 total only during emergency school closings.

How Iowa defines the age bands
- 12 months of age or younger: 0 to 12 months
- 24 months of age or younger (statute: 'Infant' means a child who is less than twenty four months of age): 0 to 24 months
- Children not attending kindergarten or a higher grade level (status defined, not month defined): 0 to open months
- Children who attend school; 'School' means kindergarten or a higher grade level (status defined, not month defined; fromMonths 0 is a schema placeholder): 0 to open months
- 'Child': a person 12 years of age or younger, or 13 through 18 with a developmental disability (42 U.S.C. 15002(8)); toMonths 156 = 13th birthday: 0 to 156 months
Mixed ages in one room
The registration category, not the mix of ages present on a given day, sets the ceiling. A category B home with one provider present follows the 8-child limits until the second adult arrives.
Real questions, short answers
How many infants can one Iowa provider have?
In categories A and B, at most 4 children under 24 months with at most 3 under 12 months. Category C, with two providers, allows 6 under 24 months.
When does Iowa require a second adult in a home?
Category B and C homes require the second provider when more than 8 children are present.
What ratio applies to an unregistered 5-child home?
None is printed for it in the chapters we verified. The binding number is the 5-child ceiling itself.
