Iowa HHS Child Care

How many kids can you watch without a license in Iowa?

Verified August 31, 2026

Iowa lets you provide child care for up to 5 children at any one time without registering: that is a child care home under Iowa Code 237A.1(5), and 237A.3(1) says it is not required to register. From the sixth child you need a child development home registration, which comes in category A (up to 8), category B (up to 12) and category C (up to 16), each with its own age grid.

What changes this answer

The five-child count is a headcount

The definition counts the children receiving child care at one time, and the record we verified treats your own children and related children as counting when they are in care. Iowa's related-children carve-outs are narrower than most states.

Subsidy changes the paperwork

A child care home that takes Child Care Assistance children signs a provider agreement and is capped at 5 under 441 IAC 120.6(1) even though no registration is required.

Only regular, less-than-24-hour care is child care

Care on a regular basis for periods of less than 24 hours per child is what the statute regulates. A one-off evening does not create a child care home.

Edition we verified

Numbers here come from Iowa Code 2026 and the 441 IAC chapters in the February 5, 2025 edition. Iowa has been rewriting chapters under its Red Tape Review, and we re-check editions on every refresh.

Real questions, short answers

How many kids can I babysit in Iowa without any paperwork?

Up to 5 children at any one time. That is a child care home, and Iowa Code 237A.3(1) says a person providing child care in a child care home is not required to register.

What do categories A, B and C mean?

They are child development home registration levels. Category A allows up to 8 children with age caps, category B up to 12, and category C up to 16 with a second provider present above 8.

How many children under 2 can a category A home have?

At most 4 children under 24 months, of whom at most 3 may be under 12 months, per 441 IAC 110.13(1).

Does school-age care raise the caps?

Each category reserves slots for school-age children: 2 of the 8 in category A, 4 of the 12 in category B, and 2 in category C, which may also go to 16 during emergency school closings.

What if someone runs a bigger operation without registering?

Operating a child development home without required registration is a simple misdemeanor under the chapter we verified, and 7 or more children at once puts a program into child care center licensing.
